There’s nothing like the warmth and glow of a real fire on a cold day! Many of you with woodburning or multifuel stoves light them again. But have you had your chimney or flue liner swept yet this year?
We recommend that you have your flue liner or chimney swept at least once a year – up to two or three times if you use your stove regularly for long periods of time. It is an essential piece of maintenance, just like taking your car to the garage for its yearly MOT and service.
Flue supplies need to be kept clear to allow the free passage of combustion gases, therefore sweeping the flue, whether it is a flexible flue liner, twin wall flue system or chimney, is very important as it ensures safety and efficiency. The sweeping removes any creosote (a tar like substance) that has stuck to the inside of the flue liner or chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and is one of the main causes of chimney fires. Large build ups of creosote are not only dangerous but if they begin to block the flue, this will affect the performance of your stove.
To find a chimney sweep in your area, try searching on the NACS website (National Association of Chimney Sweeps) or HETAS(Heating Equipment and Testing Approval Scheme for solid fuel and biomass heating systems, fuels and services), for chimney sweeps trained and approved by these associations.
