It can be easy to get confused with all the different terms used in regards to chimneys and flue supplies. Here are the definitions of some of the flue components.
ROOF FLASHING – A roof flashing is manufactured from malleable aluminum that is placed around chimney or flue pipe to prevent leaks.
CHIMNEY POT – A terracotta (ceramic) pot that sit on top of a chimney narrowing the aperture and improve fireplace draft.
CHIMNEY COWL – A chimney cowl is a steel mesh that designed to fit into a chimney cowl to stop rain and animal entry.
CHIMNEY – A vertical structure provides ventilation for gas or smoke from fireplace, boiler, stove to the air.
FLUE – A flue is a pipe or opening in a chimney that conveys the products of combustion from a stove to the air.
FLUE LINER – A structural element inside a chimney that line the space of passage through which smoke, gas ascend. The inner liner of a factory made chimney is made of stainless steel.
